To the millions of Americans you can’t afford $100 a month.

A close friend of mine may be switching jobs soon. No big deal there but what is significant is he may be switching to a job without health care benefits. Today he was asking me about paying for health insurance on your own. Since I went almost five years without health insurance he figured I’d be a good person to ask.

I told him that I never bought health care on my own. I looked into it but couldn’t afford it. He said if he took this job he would have to because he wouldn’t feel comfortable living without health insurance.

What is interesting is that I don’t think he understood that I simply could not afford to pay for my own health care. When I did look into it I realized it would cost me at least $100 a month. The fact of the matter is there were many times from 2002-2006 when I just didn’t have an extra $100 a month to spend on insurance. It’s not like I truly choose it. How could I come up with an extra $100 a month when I was gathering cans on the beach so that I could cash them in to have money so I could put gas in my car.

There are so many Americans who live like I once did. Scrapping every penny. Actually they have it worse then me. So may of them have children to support.

Nobody should have to go without health insurance. That’s why we need a Democratic President be it Clinton or Obama.

And no American should have to live in poverty.

  1. $100/mo for health insurance is, well nothing. Try paying for private insurance that averages $500/mo, $5,000 deductible and $10,000 out-of-pocket total with annual increases. Yeah, that is the reality of the private insurance market – that is if you can actually get a policy.

  2. My mother worked so hard her whole life and never had a cent left over for health insurance. So she never had any. It is a sad situation in America!
