It is true, that are youth in general don't seem to have an appreciation for what has taken place with the swearing in of President Obamba. This is largely in part due to what their life experience has been. It is important for us to realize that they do not have the same level of experience we do when it comes to racism, nor do they yet have the maturity to understand the world view. We must remember that young people, particularly teenagers are very narcissistic by nature and they live in a very limited world. Our job as adults is to help them see beyond their tiny world and help them to understand all that has transpired which makes this moment in history so very special. Trust that in 10-20 years, these same students will look back and proudly say, "I was there, when the first black president was sworn into office".

I'll think I'll be registering as a Independent as well. It's how I originally registered as an 18 year old. Then, living in New York for a long time I finally changed to Dem because you couldn't vote in the Dem primary w/o being registered as one (which is ludicrous). I'm been in L.A. for some years, but I decided after this Rick Warren thing, I've had enough. (Plus I agree with you on Dems in Congress - deadbeats). I'll become an Indie now and vote accordingly. Or not at all if I choose.

Don't you just love how they are always saying that same-sex marriage isn't in the constitution. Okay so apparently then the opposite-sex folks in California shouldn't have been allowed to marry since until Nov. 4th opposite-sex marriage wasn't in the constitution either.

Until a few years ago when they got all scared and decided the world was going to implode if same-sex couples could marry, marriage wasn't in any constitution. So I wonder why their marriages were all valid all this time.

Oh that's right they were and are valid because the Bible says so. Guess they all keep forgetting the Bible isn't what governs this country. Or it's not suppose to be anyway.

I'm a Canadian, and have been following many American elections from across the border.

The sense of electoral entitlement among some Democrats (and their more rabid supporters) is almost astonishing.

Look at the "feedback" section for any article that mentions Nader, and over and over you'll see the same garbage about "2000 election spoiler," etc. It's like reading stuff from a pack of robots.

I'll stop at that, as other contributors to this discussion have already covered most of the main points.....

The U.S. government crossed a VERY serious line with PROP 8.

This “proposition” threatened children’s sense of safety and belongingness in California. Children’s safety.

Regardless of THIS particular fight, there are way too many fights on way too many fronts for us to conquer piecemeal. The Time is Now - DRAW A NEW LINE in the sand and demand from President Obama and our representatives FULL EQUALITY.

Equality Is Simple When You Simply Include Everybody.

What? Not enough detail for the lawyers?

OK, we can list repealing DOMA, repealing DADT, include transgender in the ENDA Bill, allow adoption of abandoned children, equality in immigration
issues, recognize our hate crimes as such, equal family/children rights..........whew! See what I mean?

We are EQUAL SOULS in HUMAN BODIES. Could we please STOP discriminating due to the genitalia attached? Plumbing will determine each civil right?! Any separation from the pack is ultimately due to gender (and/or gender roles & stereotyping), and that is SEXISM. I cannot marry Bob
because I am the "wrong" gender; if I were a woman I could marry Bob. SEXISM.

And I cannot stress ENOUGH how my own suffering from Marriage Inequality is NOT the reason for wanting or needing equality. I am not something to focus on. But my story, and the stories of countless other Americans desperately need to be addressed in this civil rights struggle. Marriage laws were put in place many years ago in order to PROTECT individuals and their FAMILIES; if they were NOT necessary they would not exist (for heterosexuals). When these laws are NOT in place for ALL OF US, horrible, horrible suffering occurs. My WEBSITE has many examples.

So Americans want to continue denying us what they have already deemed as essential. And many people want us to WAIT...2....5......10.......20........30 YEARS, depending on the "civil right", for what WAS and IS our birthright.

I personally have a HUGE problem with that. I cannot wait. I will not wait.

Will you join me on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009, and help me inform the government that WE are eager to be included in the federal tax base as soon as THEY include us in society's laws? My 5-year-old students could understand this concept:

EQUAL = EQUAL

As Americans can't we agree that there are MANY other important issues to address (like the Economy, Education, Health Care, Poverty & Homelessness, Iraq/Afghanistan...all of these are related), and solving THOSE problems is more urgent than having "Equality Issues" TIE UP THE COURTS for another 30+ years? We will NOT go away.

You keep procreating; we keep popping out. Sorry.

Our representatives have spent years inventing 4-letter words (DOMA, DADT) to restrict us, deny us, demoralize us, and harm our beloved families and children. Enough is enough.

NO MORE. NO MORE.

Ralph Nader has spent over 40 years studying and understanding the Constitution. Our Constitutional rights are being made extinct at an alarming rate, and no one in Washington, including the Republican and Democratic candidates for President are addressing this issue, possibly because they support the erosion of the individual's Constitutional rights (they both, for example, support the fact that the President is now no longer responsible for possible war crimes – how can we ever be safe from a dictator in this case?). Every vote for Nader is a vote for the continuation of the core of the Constitution, which really was framed by some very smart people. The beauty of the Constitution is that the laws that are framed based upon it have a "suicide gene" built into them. If they are intelligently written, with good intent, they will be generally interpreted in the same manner by a large number of people, and will be enforced. Poorly written, poorly intentioned laws will lack ease of interpretation and become indefensible in court, and will largely be ignored. The structure of the Constitution is therefore sound and will withstand the effects of changes in our social structure, the evolution of commerce and religion, and a host of many other factors that its detractors are decrying. In the face of the loss of our Constitution (looming), we have no other structure in place. This is the basis for a dictatorship (eventually). A vote for Nader is a vote for the Constitution. The percentage of voters who vote for Nader is a clear message to ANYONE in public office that this is the percentage of citizens who will go to great lengths to assure that NO ONE'S basic rights are ignored. This is critical. A vote for Nader is a vote for this assurance, and is certainly not a waste. He won't be around forever. If we refuse to allow him to lead us, at the very least, we must allow him to keep us free, and safe from autocracy. This man has, literally, spent his entire life defending the Constitution, and it would be extreme ignorance on our part to waste those vast efforts at a time when our Constitution is on the verge of being eradicated, regardless of which major party sits in the Executive, Legislative, or Judicial branches. The Constitution truly is us – it is you; it is me; and in the event of any one or more branches of the Government assuming too much power, it is your and my ONLY voice. Don’t lose your voice, and the voice of generations to come. The battle for the creation of this structure could not occur again in our lifetimes; we simply do not have the education or energy for it. If we lose it, we will lose it for a long time; possibly forever.

Yeah, keep dreaming about a Gore victory! What did you do to get Gore into office? Did you organize people and stand out in the cold streets demanding a reassessment of what happened in Florida in 2000? Did you organize your community? Not in 2000, and not in 2004!

Democrats(=conservative liberals)have no spine and that is why they couldn't stand up to the conservative fascists in this country. Maybe they could blame Nader and his supporters, so they could divert the blame. But I didn't see as many Democrats protesting the Bush 2000 Inauguration, I saw mostly Greens, Libertarians, and Anarchists. Where were the Democrats then? Oh, right.... they don't play like that.

You get what you get. Let's see if the Democrats have finally gotten their shit together this time.
Money can buy you a lot.

YOU should "READ BE INFORMED", or perhaps proofread. Your conspiracy theory about Obama's connection with Ayers is false. Perhaps you should consider unbias sources of information before you make ridiculous claims. Oh you pathetic conservatives.
